Scenario: Fast Tracking a Battery Standard

Description:

Standards committee H5SQ3-889/R5 is charged with developing a new standard specifying quality controls for the development of batteries used in electric powered ground support equipment. To be effective with current technology, the standard has to be produced within 2 years. This time constraint requires 1) at a minimum, monthly meetings, 2) full participation from all 35 committee members, and 3) public input. Committee members are located in cities that are geographically spread out across both the United States and Canada. This distant problem makes the cost of travelling to monthly meetings very expensive. Additionally, some of the Canadian members require interpretors which would be an additional travel cost. The coordination of meetings and monitoring of committee activities is handled by the technical committee chair, Mr. TC. Mr. Monclair, a committee member from Canada, has informed the committee that he has prepared a document that he would like to submit to the committee for review as an initial first draft. Any recommended edits are to be turned in to the editorial subcommittee and used to compile the initial draft standard. Included in the editorial subcommittee are Ms. Albert, Mr. Jenkins, Mr. Thompson, and Ms. Wyman.

IC&V Program Objectives Addressed:

Domain Applicability:

This is primarily a comment-tracking, document-editing, scheduling, awareness, and decision-support application. Most of the tasks involve individual accessing of a shared document space. There is also a need for multiway communication in order to resolve editorial changes to the content of the standard's document.

Characteristics Tested:

This scenario is intended to exercise both asynchronous and synchronous communications. The tasks requiring asynchronous communication involve comment insertions and editorial changes. Synchronous communication will be needed to host audio and/or video conferencing. The test are not oriented towards quantitative performance measures.
